Ram Sales Set to Overtake Silverado

Even though most enthusiasts tend to neglect the North American truck market, you can’t ignore the fact that the three best-selling vehicles in America come from precisely this market segment.

For forty years, Ford has been dominating light-truck sales numbers with its F-Series, followed by the Chevrolet Silverado and Dodge Ram in third.

Dodge’s struggle to beat GM and Ford in this battle for the market share has been long-lasting and somewhat futile, but the winds of change are finally starting to blow in Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ favor.

But there is one part of the equation that isn’t doing FCA any favors. While the Ram is on track to outpace the Silverado, it still won’t hold a candle total GM pickup sales. Let’s not forget the GMC Sierra, which also moved 16,200 units in May. That number brings the whole of GM sales to 60,004 units, far outshining Ram sales numbers.

GM spokesperson Jim Cain raised some valid points in his response to Ram’s sales numbers.

“One should never discount the contribution of GMC to our pickup strategy. It’s a high-volume, premium brand and it makes a monthly comparison to Silverado alone kind of unfair,” said Cain. “It’s like we’re playing with one hand tied behind our back with that analysis.”

Still, as Ram pickups are among the oldest on the market, especially compared to the almost brand-new GM products, raising sales figures is still something worth celebrating for FCA and Dodge.

Even after testing both cars on a track, Motor Trend hosts Jonny Lieberman and Jason Cammisa had a tough time deciding which car was superior. The more powerful Camaro was quicker around the track than the more nimble Shelby, which surprised everyone. In the end, though, the Shelby was declared king, as it offered a purer, more refined and more enjoyable driving experience.
